The IAPG and PARLACEN organized the Parliamentary Forum on "Women’s Health: Striving Towards Equality" for Central America and the Dominican Republic

The Parliamentary Forum on "Women’s Health: Striving Towards Equality" for Central America and the Dominican Republic was convened on Friday, February 6, 2009 in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was organised by the Inter-American Parliamentary Group on Population and Development (IAPG) and the Commission of Health, Social Security, Population, Labour and Corporations of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Japan Trust Fund for Parliamentary Activities from the Japanese Government.

The forum involved the participation of parliamentarian delegations from various countries within Central America and The Dominican Republic, including representatives from respective state departments or ministries dealing with women’s issues. With special emphasis on the subject of women’s health, they exchanged experiences and best practices for the promotion, realization and strengthening of the legislative initiatives within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). In adopting a Declaration of Commitment at the end of the forum, parliamentarians affirmed that political will to achieve health-related MDG’s is fundamental for poverty reduction in each of the countries in the region.
