Argentine Senate creates the Senate Woman’s Group

Argentina - On April 9, 2008, the Senate of Argentina, led by Senator María Cristina Perceval, chair of the IAPG Board of Directors, approved the creation of the Women’s Group Special Commission. The resolution was signed by almost all female senators in the upper house, across party lines, and unanimously approved.

The group will act for one year from the effective date of its authorization and will be made up of all the female senators. Its shall provide advice, consult, track and monitor laws related to the equality of rights, opportunities and treatment of women and men, as established in article 75, paragraphs 19 and 23 of the Constitution.

It shall also have the power to include a gender perspective in the creation and approval of bills; to promote positive measures to guarantee real equality of opportunities and treatment between men and women in the family, in politics and in society; and to create a Parliamentary Agenda to promote initiatives related to the construction of an egalitarian democracy.

“The Woman’s Group’s plurality will be evident not only within the Senate, but also without. The group will coordinate strategically with women’s organizations in Argentina to establish an agenda that will allow us to overcome lingering discrimination in current laws and advance legislation that guarantees, not just formally, but in reality, women’s full citizenship, socially, economically and politically,” stated Senator Perceval.

“Political democracy that excludes half the population is not legitimate,” she continued. Women citizens, as full citizens, can work, together with men, to build a new social contract and define and agree on human values, which is what an egalitarian democracy needs and is based on.”
